Sehwag urges youngsters to grab opportunities

Virender Sehwag, standing in as captain for MS Dhoni for one more ODI, is hoping his more inexperienced players pull their weight in the absence of two proven matchwinners. With Dhoni missing, and Yuvraj Singh injured, Sehwag has urged the new generation of players in the squad to take advantage of India's predicament in an attempt to test out the resources with an eye on the 2011 World Cup.

"When the series is going on the team has to play the matches, irrespective of who is in or out. Definitely, we will miss their services but we have to look at our other options," he said in Kolkata. "The youngsters are getting an opportunity to play for their country and if they do well and make a mark it's good for the team as well. The bench strength will get stronger and stronger."

"With [the] 2011 World Cup coming up, if players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma get [an] opportunity to play and get runs, our bench strength improves."

Dinesh Karthik kept wicket in Cuttack and will get another shot to do so in tomorrow's game, with Dhoni due back after serving a two-match ban for slow over rates in Nagpur. Bengal's Manoj Tiwary has been called into the squad as a reserve player for the fourth ODI. Yuvraj is also in doubt for next month's Bangladesh tri-series, and Rohit is a strong candidate following his triple-century for Mumbai during the Ranji Trophy last season. Kohli, who stepped in for Yuvraj in the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka and scored 54 in the second, was termed a "truly special player" by Sehwag.

"He had played very well in the Champions Trophy," he said. "Hopefully he will become a star of the future. We are all looking forward to him."

Trevor Bayliss, Sri Lanka's coach, has urged his squad's batsmen to step up as the visitors aim to cash in on Dhoni and Yuvraj's absence. "In the last game, probably for the first time in the series, we did not bat well. We did not score enough runs," he said. "If we had scored in an excess of 300, which we we were looking at one stage of the match, we would have had a fair chance of winning that match.

"So we have to get back to scoring runs so that we can put pressure on the opposition. It does not matter what team you are. If you are under pressure, you will lose wickets. Good sides make their own luck. I don't think there would be any different."

India lead 2-1 with two games to go and a win at the Eden Gardens will seal the contest their way.

India in Battle for survival

Big picture

There are all sorts of scenarios and permutations about which teams could make it through to the semi-finals in Group A but the simplest is this: if Australia beat India, it will be Pakistan and Australia who progress. The group will be done and dusted with two games to go. Things become more complex if India win. They will be in prime position due to their remaining game against a weakened West Indies and Australia's fixture against an unbeaten Pakistan. However, should India and Australia either both win or both lose their last group game, net run-rate will be required to determine the semi-finalists.

It means that there's a lot riding on this day-night encounter and neither team enters the match in peak form. India have the advantage of familiarity with the conditions at Centurion, where they lost to Pakistan on Saturday. Australia are coming off a win but it was a scratchy and in parts unconvincing victory against an under-strength West Indies in the different conditions at the Wanderers. It's hard to predict a winner, though the bookmakers favour Australia.

Australia will be most concerned about breaking India's opening partnership early; Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar have troubled Ricky Ponting's men in the past and Australia's fast bowlers lacked penetration against West Indies. The presence or absence of the stiff and sore Michael Clarke looms as another potential key. Unlike India, Australia aren't automatically out if they lose but it will be a hard road back. The teams meet for seven one-dayers in India in October and November but none will matter as much as this game.

Team news

Clarke's stiff back ruled him out of the game against West Indies and Australia will be hoping he can get up for what should be a much tougher contest with India. Should Clarke prove his fitness, Australia must decide who to leave out and it's not an easy decision. Callum Ferguson, Cameron White and James Hopes are the likely contenders to drop out of the side and despite an excellent start to his international career, Ferguson could be the unlucky one as he does not offer a bowling option.

MS Dhoni said he felt three bowlers short at times, such was the ease with which runs were scored in the middle of Pakistan's innings, and India are certain to play five specialist bowlers on Monday. Harbhajan Singh did not bowl well against Pakistan but he is a bogey player for Australia and regularly lifts against them. The other bowling options in India's squad are Praveen Kumar and the legspinner Amit Mishra, who is a strong contender. Praveen could edge in ahead of RP Singh, who took 1 for 59 in nine overs against Pakistan.

Watch out for...

He might have retired from Twenty20 internationals but Ricky Ponting remains Australia's most important player in ODI cricket. He was magnificent in compiling 79 against West Indies in difficult conditions and a big Ponting score can be the difference between mediocrity and dominance from Australia. He has made plenty of runs against India, but Harbhajan and Ishant Sharma have caused him problems. As always with Ponting, the key is piercing his defences within his first couple of overs at the crease.

Ishant Sharma was one of the better bowlers against Pakistan with figures of 2 for 39, but he has struggled for consistency. But he has enjoyed success against Australia in the past and has nine ODI wickets at 19.33 against them. Importantly for India, he has a bit of a hold on Ponting, having dismissed him six times in international cricket. The ball angling in to the top of off stump troubles Ponting early and Ishant will be a key man for India for that reason alone. He has also dismissed Clarke six times, so Ishant may be hoping Australia's vice-captain passes his fitness test.

Pitch and conditions

India have the advantage of having just played in Centurion, where the conditions are different to the Wanderers. The surface is much slower and provides more assistance to the spinners. Runs are available if the bowlers fail to adjust and Australia will need to sharpen their efforts after struggling to run through West Indies on a cracking and helpful Johannesburg pitch. There is also a strong chance of showers in the evening, so the teams should bear that in mind at the toss.

Australia and India seem to play each other so often that it's hard to believe they haven't met in an ODI for 18 months, when India wrapped up the CB Series at the Gabba. It's so long ago that Adam Gilchrist was still playing

Navratri day by day

Navratri, the festival of nights, lasts for 9 days with three days each devoted to worship of Ma Durga, the Goddess of Valor, Ma Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Ma Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge. During the nine days of Navratri, feasting and fasting take precedence over all normal daily activities amongst the Hindus. Evenings give rise to the religious dances in order to worhip Goddess Durga Maa.

one to third day of Navratri On the first day of the Navaratras, a small bed of mud is prepared in the puja room of the house and barley seeds are sown on it. On the tenth day, the shoots are about 3 - 5 inches in length. After the puja, these seedlings are pulled out and given to devotees as a blessing from god. These initial days are dedicated to Durga Maa, the Goddess of power and energy. Her various manifestations, Kumari, Parvati and Kali are all worshipped during these days. They represent the three different classes of womanhood that include the child, the young girl and the mature woman.

four to sixth day of Navratri During these days, Lakshmi Maa, the Goddess of peace and prosperity is worshipped. On the fifth day which is known as Lalita Panchami, it is traditional, to gather and display all literature available in the house, light a lamp or 'diya' to invoke Saraswati Maa, the Goddess of knowledge and art.

seven to eigth day of Navratri These final days belong to Saraswati Maa who is worshipped to acquire the spiritual knowledge. This in turn will free us from all earthly bondage. But on the 8th day of this colourful festival, yagna (holy fire) is performed. Ghee (clarified butter), kheer (rice pudding) and sesame seeds form the holy offering to Goddess Durga Maa.

Mahanavami The festival of Navratri culminates in Mahanavami. On this day Kanya Puja is performed. Nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped. Their feet are washed as a mark of respect for the Goddess and then they are offered new clothes as gifts by the worshiper. This ritual is performed in most parts of the country.

My Busy days

My 2nd revision tests are going on these days are very enjoyable days in my life,no other work except studies.I wake up at 6.00am and I spend more than 2.30 hrs in writing test and rest of my days in reading other subjests. I am very thrilled as I am going to face ny first board exan in my life on March 18. My 1st revision marks too received I am some what satisfied with my marks, this time I have increased my percentage.My Maths marks disappoints me as it is 98% but my aim was centum. Though a good mark as I am one of the three in class toppers. Bedore I receive my 1st revision mark sheet I had to write 2 nd revision....

I think in coming days I wouldn't even have time to post.So don't hesitate to read my Blog.And I think this is my last post till April 8th till then bye from me...

My practicals is about to start in a week or two. My important days in my life is nearing. Meanwhile an idea of changing school for +1 and +2, I have bought applications from the schools I knew and I hope to select a better school, though shifting my housw from A.T.Nagar.

A year that began with defeat in one of the most controversial Tests
of the modern age ended with a cathartic run-chase that transcended
cricket. Two thousand eight wasn't without its embarrassments - being bowled out inside 20 overs in a Test match surely wasn't part of the script - but Test victories over Australia and England, and convincing one-day triumphs in Australia and Sri Lanka,
meant that this was a 12-month period to savour. Two legends of the
Indian game, Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly, bid adieu, but newcomers
like Gautam Gambhir and Ishant Sharma established themselves, to ensure
that the future looked as bright as it had ever been.

The early part of the year was dominated by events
at the Sydney Cricket Ground - umpiring controversies, allegations of
conduct that flouted the spirit of cricket, and a dramatic last-gasp
finish - but in the months that followed, Indian cricket seemed to gain
strength from its experience of that adversity. The tri-nation
tournament in Australia was comfortably won after Sachin Tendulkar
scripted two epic innings and Praveen Kumar proved an unexpected joker in the bowling pack.

After Sydney, India ceded no ground to Australia. In six subsequent
Test matches, they won three and drew the rest. Kumble led them to a
famous success in Perth,
but by the time a series was clinched on home soil, the baton had been
passed. Mahendra Singh Dhoni led with verve and his unique brand of
cool to inspire victories at Mohali and Nagpur, and for once, Australia had no answers.

India's big blip of the year came in Dhoni's absence, in Sri Lanka.
Though Virender Sehwag's strokemaking brilliance helped them to victory
in Galle, Sri Lanka were streets ahead in the two Tests played in Colombo, with Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan humiliating the most feted batting line-up in the game.

Dhoni's decision to take a break had been prompted by a nightmarish
schedule that saw two back-to-back one-day tournaments immediately
after the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League. His Chennai
Super Kings had been denied at the death in the IPL, and Dhoni was
helpless to prevent the same fate in the Kitply Cup and the Asia Cup,
with Pakistan and Sri Lanka proving too strong at the final hurdle. The
Asia Cup nemesis would become a familiar foe a month later. Mendis' 6
for 13 was candidate for spell of the year, but with their victory on
Lankan soil two months later, Dhoni's men proved that they could learn
from their mistakes.

The IPL saw its share of thrills and dramatic
falls from grace, starting with Brendon McCullum's 13-six assault in
the tournament opener in Bangalore. The three most expensive franchises
- Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad - all failed to make the last four,
and the Cinderella story was written by Shane Warne and his Rajasthan
Royals, by some distance the least expensive team. Warne played a huge
role in the success, and the mammoth crowds and record TV ratings
suggested that Lalit Modi's experiment with the club system is
certainly here to stay.

High point
No one-day or Twenty20 game could come close to
matching a Test for pure excitement. England outplayed India for most
of the game in Chennai,
and most teams wouldn't even think of chasing 387 to win a Test, but
then most teams don't have Sehwag opening the innings. The 50 came up
in the sixth over, and though he was dismissed for 83, before stumps on
the fourth evening, it left India needing to score just 256 on the
final day. Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman couldn't stick around, but
Tendulkar ensured that there would be no repeat of the 1999 heartbreak
against Pakistan. This time he stayed right till the end, with Yuvraj's
dashing 85 providing sterling support, clinching victory as only a
champion could - with a deft stroke that also raised his 41st century.
Three weeks on from the terror attacks in Mumbai, a nation smiled and
saluted its favourite son.

Low point
The two defeats in Sri Lanka were hopelessly
one-sided. Tendulkar finished the series with 95 runs, Ganguly with 96.
Even more painful, though, was the drubbing in Ahmedabad at South
African hands. On a green-tinged pitch, India lasted the length of a
Twenty20 innings against the pace and accuracy of Dale Steyn, Makhaya
Ntini and Morne Morkel.

New kid on the block
Ishant Sharma's spells to Ricky Ponting
in Perth and Mohali were little vignettes of Test cricket at its finest
- a top-class batsman being given the runaround by a young tyro with
something to prove. With his height, Ishant gets steepling bounce and
he's as adept with the old ball as he is with the new one. The hair may
have gone for a snip, but unlike Samson, he certainly hasn't lost his
strength.

What 2009 holds
In 2008, India made a concerted push towards
the top of the table in both forms of the game. Dhoni, the new leader,
doesn't believe in rankings. "As long as we keep performing in the
middle, they will take care of themselves," he says. That's an
admirable attitude to have.

A real test of progress will come in New Zealand,
where India haven't won for four decades. There's also the small matter
of defending the World Twenty20 crown in England in the summer. With
its blend of experience and mature youth, nothing is beyond this team,
though.

My half yearly Exams are nearing so I don't have much time to post.
I am very busy in Reading.It starts on next week. My half yearly portions are full text book. Totally 11 Exams in 16 days. Writing for 1100 marks,my aim is to get more than 800 marks now.My perfect target is to get 100% in maths 1 and maths 2 papers, as I did in my Quarterly.
Followed my half yearly exams comes my revision tests, even no holidays for Christmas.Revision tests have three cycle of my all 10 subjects.It starts in 26th DEC and ends in 12th of March. Then comes my Board exam.
Though I can't post till march just hang up with my blog and drop your worthy comments.

India's unmanned lunar spacecraft Chandrayaan the unmanned lunar spacecraft is functioning normally even though there has been a rise in temperature in the moon's atmosphere, an ISRO official said on Wednesday.

“It is a usual phenomena because it is summer on the moon. There is nothing to worry. It will be normal by December,” said Mr Satish, ISRP spokesperson. He said the craft's nine payloads, which have been switched on, are working fine and sending back dat a.

In view of the rise in temperature, ISRO will not work on all the payloads at a given time to ensure that they are not affected by the heat, he said. “Two of the high voltage payloads SARA and Hex will be switched on shortly. These payloads are sensitive equipment and need more voltage. By the first week of December, the atmosphere will become benign on the moon,” he said.

India to register 500% growth for broadband services within 5 years

India has traditionally been known for its cellular service potential. But the cellular services will soon have to share focus with broadband services as well since the country is all set to register the highest growth in broadband subscriber base by 2013.

India is estimated to move from its current position at number 18 in the world for broadband market and jump to attain the number 6 rank. This will be achieved at a mind-boggling growth rate of 489%. This is the highest growth rate expected from any market and is almost the double from the second highest growth market i.e. Vietnam (276%).

Broadband services as a whole will grow by 67 percent over the next five years to reach landmark 680 million connections worldwide. This is a significant surge as compared to yearly growth rate of 28% registered for broadband services from 2004 to 2008.

The growth of the services is likely to be from the developing markets including the merging markets like Russia, India, China, Brazil while countries like South Korea, Japan and Denmark are close to saturation level.

“With its burgeoning economy and huge population India will zoom up the rankings of the largest broadband countries in the world. Currently at number 18 in the charts it will hit number 6 by the end of 2013,” said Tim Johnson, Chief Analyst at Point Topic, the firm behind the research.

“Central and South America will see the most high-growth countries. Brazil will shortly enter the top 10 broadband countries in the world, most likely before the end of 2008, and again with a decent economic base and a large population hungry for bandwidth it will outperform most other countries in the next 5 years," he added.

The firm says that even though the subscriber base may sound lucrative there is still scope for growth after the five years as only two-third of world’s population wil have access to broadband by 2013.

India recall Tendulkar for England ODIs

One-day cricket's leading batsman Sachin Tendulkar was on Thursday included in the India squad for the next two matches against England, the cricket board said.

Tendulkar, 35, was rested for the first three games at his own request following the four-Test series against world champions Australia which India won 2-0 to annexe the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Tendulkar, who has a world record 16,361 runs and 42 centuries to his name in 417 one-day internationals, last played limited-overs cricket for India in the tri-series in Australia in March.

Tendulkar and all-rounder Irfan Pathan are the two changes in the 15-man squad which took a 3-0 lead in the seven-match series against England here earlier on Thursday.

The duo replace seamer Rudra Pratap Singh and uncapped opener Murali Vijay for the next two day-night matches in Bangalore on Sunday and Cuttack on Wednesday.

The squad for the last two games in Guwahati and New Delhi will be named after the Cuttack match.

India win by 16 runs in fading light

Harbhajan Singh picked up the Man-of-the-Match award for his 3 for 31, which restricted England to 240 while batting first

India made heavy work of an under-par England total in the first evenly-contested match between the two sides, but edged ahead thanks to a superior run-rate under the Duckworth/Lewis method when bad light curtailed their chase after 40 overs.

Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh produced some fireworks during India's chase, and that ultimately proved crucial as the umpires were forced to stop play in murky conditions, with India ahead by 16 runs. The toss, scheduled at 8:30 am local, had been put back 45 minutes because of the thick haze and overcast conditions in smoggy Kanpur, but only one over was docked from each innings, and to top it off, the lunch interval was not shortened.

The win could not have been possible without India's spinners, who had made the most of the pitch with 22 tidy overs that derailed England after a strong start. Harbhajan Singh picked up 3 for 31, his best returns since April 2006, incidentally against England at home.

Perhaps confident of chasing a relatively low target, India threw their bats at the bowling but lost two quick wickets. After consecutive half-centuries, Gautam Gambhir fell for 14, slashing Andrew Flintoff's fifth delivery to third man. Suresh Raina went next, inside-edging a leaden-footed, ambitious drive against Stuart Broad (40 for 2). Sehwag decided that spin would be attacked - Samit Patel put down a hard caught and bowled when he was on 47 - and raised his half-century with six off Graeme Swann. A stand of 68 with Rohit Sharma thrust the initiative back India's way, only for the latter to throw it back with a loose cut against Graeme Swann in the 23rd over.

Flintoff's return in the 26th over ended Sehwag's resistance on 68, thanks to a brilliant reaction catch from Paul Collingwood at backward point. Sehwag absolutely smashed the ball and Collingwood intercepted it with a leap in the air. Attempting to edge ahead of the D/L requirement, India took their batting Powerplay after 34 overs, and Yuvraj welcomed it with a six. Attempting to hit another, he pulled Flintoff to deep square leg, holing out to Broad this time leaving the crowd stunned.

India were ten runs ahead at this point in fading light. Dhoni scampered singles and Yusuf Pathan found the gaps as well, taking Flintoff for consecutive boundaries. Matt Prior fluffed a leg-side stumping off his captain to reprieve Yusuf in the 39th over, but by then it was game up for England.

This win was set up in the field. Having lost the toss and looking on as England's openers added 79, Dhoni used his spinners well. Slowing the pace for the batsmen, he fired an impressive comeback with a steady flow of wickets. Not only did India restrict England in the middle overs, they also reduced the threat of a late-innings attack, with the otherwise wayward Ishant Sharma narrowly missing a hat-trick in the penultimate over. No boundaries were scored by England in the last three overs.

The visitors earlier got off to an assured start despite the hazy conditions. Ian Bell and Ravi Bopara struck a partnership of 79 for the first wicket, scoring at over five-and-a-half an over. At this stage, Kevin Pietersen probably wouldn't have envisioned how the innings would unravel. Bell was dismissed by Munaf Patel four short of his half-century and that triggered a collapse, with the run rate also dipping.

Dhoni turned to spin after the first drinks break, operating with the Singhs, Yuvraj and Harbhajan. Pietersen - back at No. 3 - took on Yuvraj with a driven six over long-on but couldn't dominate Harbhajan, spooning a catch to long-off on 13.

Collingwood's dismissal was a gem, set up craftily by Harbhajan. Having tossed up a few offbreaks, Harbhajan slipped in the doosra to suck Collingwood further. The ball crept past his bat and Dhoni completed a smart stumping (106 for 3). That ball would have done in far better batsmen and Harbhajan continued to bowl admirably, tossing the ball up and landing it on all the right areas.

Having brought up his fourth ODI half-century with a blazing boundary through cover, Bopara was stumped off Yuvraj for 60. The rebuilding was now left to Flintoff, who was joined by Owais Shah at 133 for 4, but his struggles against spin continued. Moving across to Yusuf, he was struck plumb in front below the knee roll for 26. Dhoni's decision to give the ball to Pathan immediately after the second drinks break had paid dividends.

England took the batting Powerplay after 38 overs, but managed 21 in the four overs. Shah hit some breezy strokes before becoming Harbhajan's 200th ODI wicket, chipping to long-off for 40 from 42 balls.

England played better in this game, and more than questioning the laws of cricket, and should rue the batting collapse for the 0-3 deficit.

Gmail offers new Inbox themes

Gmail owners, Google, wanted "to go beyond simple color customization" and have announced 30 new themes.

There's many new themes to fit your style, a shiny theme with chrome styling, another one that turns your inbox into a retro notepad, nature themes that change scenery over time and even a weather theme that can rain on your mailbox. There's even an old school ascii theme (Terminal) to geek up your mailbox.

Google have also done some work to Gmail's default look to make it "crisper and cleaner".

To customise your inbox, go to the Themes tab under Settings. Google say they will be rolling out themes to everyone over the next couple of days, so you may not see the themes just yet.

Gmail users have been building up custom themes using third-party tools like Greasemonkey or custom user stylesheets for quite some time. Officially, Gmail previously offered the mobile, classic HTML or their normal views only. Google also uses themes in products like their personalised homepage iGoogle or Google Reader's shared items page. The new Gmail themes will certainly be a welcomed addition for many.

Here's an overview of some of the themes to give you an idea of just how far you can customise your Gmail look.

LASER Instrument on Chandrayaan-1 Successfully Turned ON

Lunar Laser Ranging Instrument (LLRI), one of the 11 scientific instruments (payloads) carried by Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, has successfully been turned ON today (November 16, 2008). The instrument was switched ON when the spacecraft was passing over western part of the moon’s visible hemisphere. Preliminary assessment of the data from LLRI by ISRO scientists indicates that the instrument’s performance is normal. LLRI sends pulses of infrared laser light towards a strip of lunar surface and detects the reflected portion of that light. With this, the instrument can very accurately measure the height of moon’s surface features. LLRI will be continuously kept ON and takes 10 measurements per second on both day and night sides of the moon. It provides topographical details of both polar and equatorial regions of the moon. Detailed analysis of the data sent by LLRI helps in understanding the internal structure of the moon as well as the way that celestial body evolved.

It may be recalled that earlier, three other payloads of Chandrayaan-1 – Terrain Mapping Camera (TMC), Radiation Dose Monitor (RADOM) and Moon Impact Probe (MIP) – were successfully turned ON. MIP, carrying Indian tricolour, was released from the spacecraft on November 14, 2008 and 25 minutes later, successfully impacted the lunar surface as intended. TMC took pictures of the Earth and moon when the spacecraft was on its way to moon. After reaching lunar orbit, TMC has been taking breathtaking pictures of the lunar panorama. RADOM was also switched ON in the Earth orbit itself.

The pictures and other scientific data sent by Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft from lunar orbit have been received by antennas of Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) at Byalalu. The spacecraft operations are being carried out from the Satellite Control Centre (SCC) of ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Bangalore.

NEW DELHI: Yuvraj Singh was dismissed by Stuart Broad after a magnificent knock of 118 runs that left India at 242/6 in 44 overs in the second
Trying to make optimum use of the third powerplay taken by India, Yuvraj went for a big shot but edged it to keeper Matt Prior to take a simple catch.

Yuvraj hit 15 fours and two sixes in his magnificent knock and his 10th ODI century was instrumental in saving India who were rattled after losing three quick wickets.

Yuvraj, who had hit a stunning hundred in the first ODI at Rajkot, came up with even a better performance for his back-to-back hundred considering India were 29/3 when he came to the crease and the pitch is not a beauty of a wicket to bat on.
Yuvraj is the fifth Indian to hit back-to-back centuries in ODI cricket after the Fab Four that is, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

Yuvraj's century came off 107 balls and his knock was studded with 12 fours and two sixes.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (15) was clean bowled by Paul Collingwood immediately after Yuvraj's century by an off-cutter that came back in to hit the stumps.

England captain Kevin Pietersen dismissed Gautam Gambhir (70) in his first over to reduce India to 163/4 in 30 overs.

Gambhir tried to flick from outside off but edged the delivery onto his stumps much to the delight of Pietersen who was hit for a six earlier in the over by the Indian opener.

Gambhir hit six fours and a six in his gritty knock and rescued India from a precarious position by adding 134 runs with Yuvraj for the fourth wicket.

After losing three early wickets, Gambhir and Yuvraj steadied the proceedings hitting half-centuries.

Putting up a 100-run stand off 105 balls, both Gambhir and Yuvraj played well not taking undue risks, hitting boundaries off the bad deliveries and were also constantly on the look out for singles.

Gambhir reached his 13th ODI fifty off 56 balls with the help of six fours.

When he reached 7, Gambhir completed 1000 runs in the calendar year.

England pacer Stuart Broad took three wickets in four overs to reduce India to 30/3 in 8 overs. Broad took his third wicket when he surprised Rohit Sharma (3) by a short delivery who tried to pull it from outside off but edged high up in the air for Owais Shah to take the catch at square leg.

India got off to a bad start as Broad took two wickets in two overs to reduce the hosts to 16/2 in 4 overs. Broad got the second Indian wicket when he had Suresh Raina (4) caught at mid-wicket by Samit Patel. Raina failed to read the slower ball and went into the shot early and edged it to Patel.

In the previous over, Virender Sehwag (1) tried to cut a Broad delivery but that was too close to his body and he ended up edging it onto his stumps much to the delight of the visitors.

Already in the first over there were signs that it is a dual paced pitch and the ball is not coming on to the bat even though the curator said that it is a 300 plus wicket.

After winning the toss, Dhoni said that India have to guard against complacency and the pitch will assist the spinners later on.
